Review: Sony Xperia J1 Compact

Introduction

Sony which has been quite aggressive in 2015 by launching quite a new models and this time it has come with a latest 'SIM-free' smartphone and has been christened as the Sony Xperia J1 Compact (D5788) . The launch took place in Japan in partnership with NTT DoCoMo. The phone is expected to be priced at JPY 59,184 (approximately $485 or Rs. 30,000).


Getting to know about Xperia J1 Compact

This smartphone is company's first LTE communication "PLAY SIM" phone with MVNO (mobile virtual network operator) support, that provides voice calls plans on NTT DoCoMo tailored to consumer needs as alluded by Sony. The phone is nicely complemented with amazing hardware specification as well which justifies its price tag as well.

Build & Quality

Inside the hood, the smartphone comes with following specifications:

Processor & RAM: It sports a 2.2GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor coupled with 2GB of RAM

Display: The smartphone features a 4.3-inch HD (720x1280 pixels) display

OS: Xperia J1 compact runs on Android 4.4.4 KitKat OS

Storage: Impressive 16 GB internal storage that is expandable potentially to 64 GB

Camera: This is a the major USP of the phone as it comes with powerful 20.7-megapixel rear camera with flash just like Xperia Z3, and a 2.2-megapixel front facing camera

Connectivity: The phone features 4G LTE, GPS/ A-GPS, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0, and NFC capabilities

Battery: Xperia J1 is powered by a 2300mAh non-removable battery

Other features: Sony Xperia J1 Compact is light weight at 138 grams and measures 128x65x9.7mm. This phone also comes with IPX5/ IPX8 water and dust protection ratings

General Observation & Verdict

Xperia J1 Compact is a great smartphone however we would have expected it come with Android Lollipop instead of a Kitkat. Apart from that, rest of specifications & features are good. It will be interesting to see how this phone performs on MVNO in countries like India, Indonesia, Malaysia etc. We would rate this phone 3 out of 5.
