Tips & Tricks: 10 things to consider while buying a new laptop

We all know that latest smartphones are capable of performing many computing activities however laptops are never out of work. You still need a laptop for more 'serious' computing capabilities at work, gaming or for leisure.

In case you are planning to buy or upgrade to a new Laptop, below are some key things you should consider.

Also Read: Detailed review on Xiaomi Laptop - Macbook Air look alike with Intel processor, 16GB RAM for $480

10 Key Things To Know When You Upgrade Your Laptop/Notebook

1) Screen Size:

This is one of the major selection criteria if you are planning to buy any laptop. Screen sizes may vary from lightweight 12 to 14-inch and even 15.6 / 17 inches. However with designs do come some trade-offs like – with smaller screen, the keyboard might be smaller or battery life and performance may be impacted. Most popular screen sized laptops are 15.6-inch which are suitable for graphics video editing, gaming and designing. The powerful laptops are typically of 15.6-inch or 17-inch sizes. For frequent travelers or mobile users, 12-14 inch laptop fits the bill due to light weight.

2) Design: Conventional or Hybrid

Many modern days laptops comes with flex mode, tablet convertibles/ hybrids, 360 rotatable and keyboard detachable (touch enabled). However these new laptops comes at a price tag – again if you need laptop for generic need – conventional laptops are good, however if you are too much into travel and presentations, reading on the go – than convertible laptop can be used.

3) Connectivity Options:

Many older laptops models comes with several ports like S-video, VGA, Firewire, multiple audio jacks, USB ports and so on. However, modern day laptops are so much smaller, you mostly get a very less USB ports, limited HDMI and a card reader slots. Some ultra-thin designs have even fewer USB ports and collapsible Ethernet ports. The latest tech fad is to dump Ethernet and video out entirely and go for USB type C ports (which will be universal and multipurpose).

Hence if you have connectivity issues at home or work and would need LAN cables, you may go for conventional Laptops. However if your home/ work place is fully WiFi enabled, 4G or Bluetooth compliant, you can go for ultra-thin laptops.

4) Drives:

Optical drives are bulky, so they've been dropped away within most models today. However, you'll still find 15.6-inch laptops with optical drives if you need one. The major trend is a shift to flash-based storage (SSDs) as compared to hard drives (HDDs). Flash storage is more costly but can be much smaller, lighter and offers better speed.

5) Touch Enabled Laptop:

These devices does reflect a lot of benefits especially for digital users who are more touch-savy, it will be easier to scroll through webpages, reading eBooks, large folders, photos and long documents. Windows 10 interface is optimized for touch and you can download many touch-optimized apps. However for traditional users, you can still opt for keyboard and mouse, you'll save money by dropping the touchscreen.

6) Battery Life:

This is one of the serious selection criteria. Old school Laptops had a battery life of 2 to 3 hours. However in today’s world, bare minimum battery life of 5 to 6 hours is desirable however for a full-workday without plugging in, you need 8 to 10 hours of battery life, for which you still have to pay a premium. Specially in India, where 24 hours electricity is still an issue, long battery life is always key consideration.

7) Graphic Cards:

Laptops can come with 3 kinds of graphics cards viz. Cohesive graphics chips, discrete graphics cards and some which have switchable graphics (to auto switch between internal and discrete graphics).

For regular use of documents, web, multimedia and basic games, integrated (cohesive)graphics are going to do just fine. If your main purpose is gaming or professional graphics video editing, then you should get a notebook with dedicated graphics card. Switchable graphics will conserve power if you're only doing basic use.

8) Operating System:

The OS impacts the overall cost of any laptop – You can buy a laptop without an operating system as it is a major cost saving – and run it on Linux or other open-source alternatives if you are familiar – Xubuntu, Ubuntu, Red Hat, Puppy Linux are few to name.

However for easy usage, Windows is still the most popular OS used by Corporate and Home users and is cheaper to buy a laptop bundled with an operating system rather than buying a standalone operating system later.

For niche users, you have an option to select Mac OS which comes at a premium and runs only on Mac Devices. These laptops are most expensive in today’s market.

10) Configuration (Processor - RAM - HDD):

Today, users can select from two processors – Intel and AMD. Intel still rules 90% of laptop world. For conventional users, they should go for Intel Core i5 or i7 processor (Dual or Quad core), with minimum 4GB/8GB RAM and 500 GB HDD. These laptops starts from Rs. 35,000 upto Rs. 1.5 Lacs.

We would not recommend, Intel Celeron M; i3 as they are slowly fading out.

However if you want very basic version, you can get a laptop on Atom Processor, 2/4 GB RAM and 256/500 GB HDD and is available from Rs. 15,000 to Rs. 30,000. You also have an option to buy a Chrome Laptop - which runs on Google's Chrome OS ( Cloudbased ) and is available for as little as Rs. 15,000.

Even Macbooks come in similar configuration but are very expensive due to hardware durability and UI. Macbooks are lightest of all laptops and comes with very long battery life.

A Guide to buy right Head-Phones

In modern era of Gadgets - especially with Tablets & Smart phones / Notebooks, they are half incomplete if they are not complemented by a decent Headphones/ Headphone with Mic. No matter what your budget is, everybody wants their listening experience - especially the quality of sound to be optimally best. For music lovers, headphones are inevitable as people tend to spend more of their lives on the go. The other true benefits of Headsphone with Mic is that you can chat with your friends, without actually holding your gadgets in your hands and talk/listen while you are mobile without disturbing others, whether they're roommates, neighbors, or fellow commuters. Head-phones with mic are great multi-taskers in today's time.

Getting to know about modern day Headphones (with Mic)

Most of the customers/buyers in South Asia especially in India , considers buying of a new smartphone/ tablet or notebook as an investment with an estimated lifespan of around three years, yet the question always strikes  which are the cheapest pair of headphones I can buy?
If you have soon-to-be-obsolete tablet, phone, or MP3 player, you can bring new lease of life to it for as low Rs 300 and can go up Rs 10,000 (in case you have a wider budget) by getting a high-quality pair of headphones and really begin to enjoy all the sweet-sounding audio.

Types & Build of Various Headphones (with Mic)

Ear-Buds - these are very popular, inexpensive source of sound accessory for your gadgets. Earbuds are not an ideal listening option, since they don't enter your ear canal and as a result don't create a true seal that destroys the balance of the audio mix— solid bass response is purely eliminated. If you are really pressed for budget, you can get one of these.

Earphone - They sit further in your ear canal resulting into a seal, providing comfort when worn. They are much better than Ear-buds in terms of sound quality. However for Bass lovers a reasonable quality starts to emerge in the Rs 1500 range. There are few models from Skullcandy which are good.

Headphones -These are over-the-head (or behind-the-head) speakers that don't enter your ear canals at all. Circumaural models create a seal with cups that surround/cover your entire ear, whereas open, or supra-aural headphones sit directly on your ears without forming a seal. Some listeners also find headphones more comfortable to wear, and easier to put on and take off, than they do earphones. When it comes to consumer headphones, several companies stand out, including Sennheiser, Yamaha, Beyerdynamic, and Grado.

Noise-Canceling Headphones - As the name sugests, the noise-canceling headphones helps you enjoy  audio at much lower volumes. Most of these head-phones offers good or better-than-good sound quality and excellent comfort for long-term wearing.
Some of these Headphone comes with mic and offer extremely good quality call sound. Plantronics offer such headphones which are Lync & Skype compatible that offers both noise cancellation features in mic as well as headset. These headphones from Plantronics usually starts at a range of Rs 8,000.

Wireless Headphones - Wireless headphones are the most advanced of all head-phones. They are mostly based on Bluetooth technology and  the data signal containing Bluetooth audio is compressed. Post which the enhancement of the signal takes place to compensate for its deficiencies in a way that makes them less audible than before.
Few famous wireless headphones are from house of Jabra called Move Wireless and the SuperTooth Freedom, both of which double as headsets to let you answer cell phone calls.

General Observation & Verdict

Selecting a right head-phone (with or without mic) is no less than an art. While we have explained some bit of science also behind different kinds of head-phones, at the end there will be factors like price, usability & quality which will decide what you really need & desire.

Review: Raspberry Pi 2 Model B - A $35 Computer on Windows 10

Imagine a $35 minicomputer that runs Windows 10? Unbelievable it may sound however a low-power Raspberry Pi development platform from Raspberry Pi Foundation has been leaked out by The Register. The new Raspberry Pi 2 Model B, will come for same price but with an upgraded components.

Getting to know about Raspberry Pi 2 Model B

The model sports a Broadcom BCM2836 SoC that comes with four ARM Cortex A7 cores. It’s surely a significant improvement as earlier models were mostly single-core general-purpose application processor. We may assume that the performance will increase 6 folds but that’s on paper as most of applications will not put strain on system by utilizing all its core.

Build & Quality

Some of the USP of this model is as follows:
RAM: The Raspberry Pi 2 will arrive with 1GB of RAM

Ports: HDMI 1.4 output, 3.5mm composite video and stereo audio output, four USB 2.0 ports, microSD slot, 10/100 Ethernet port, Micro-USB power port, and 40-pin IO layout.
Storage: The microSD card has been integrated to make it sturdier

Power:  The amount of power you would be saving will be in the region of 0.5W to 1W, taking the board itself down to 3W.

OS: Microsoft have recently declared that the Raspberry Pi 2 will be able to run a version of Windows 10 along with associated services. This is in line with Microsoft's Windows Developer Program for IoT(Internet of Things) which targets to bring Windows to ultra-low-powered devices. Infact Windows 10 will be available for free for the Raspberry Pi.

Price: The Raspberry Pi 2 will be purchased from here

General Observation & Verdict

A computing device for $35 is a welcome launch. It could play a huge impact in field of education especially in poor African & Asian countries who do not have access to basic computing facilities. The prices can be reduced further if mass production of computing devices are done. We would be betting very high on this incredible launch. It’s clearly a winner here.

Review: WhatSim - A free WhatsApp SIM for Worldwide roaming

With so many IM Apps & Messengers like Yahoo, Gtalk (now called as Hangouts) the open ended IM apps like Viber, Hike have changed the way we chat real time over our mobile device by simply using our mobile number, but one IM app which truly revolutionized the new mode of communication over SMS, was indeed WhatsApp with about 700 million monthly active users. This led to its acquisition by Facebook which has now world's largest base of active users collectively using IM & Social networking services. To inch further an Italian company had launched a unique product called WhatSim, a WhatsApp–only SIM which allows you to use messaging app for free while travelling across 150 countries, with a nominal subscription plan.

Getting to know about WhatSIM

Zeromobile, the company founded by Manuel Zanella, alluded that "WhatsApp is the future of mobile communications. Its only "limit" is the data connection especially when you are traveling because the roaming charges are expensive and you can't always find Wi-Fi everywhere and it is not always free. As someone who appreciates and uses WhatsApp, I tried to figure out how to get around this problem. That's why WhatSim is an extraordinary opportunity for WhatsApp."

Also read about : Oppo U3, a 64-bit SOC with Octa Core processor

Build & Quality

The new SIM will come for EUR 10 (Rs. 714) with worldwide shipping of EUR 5 - Rs. 350 approximately) and that will allow an unlimited text messaging for an year. But there is a small caveat. The unlimited messaging (including location updates & contacts)  is free only for text messages and not for sharing multimedia / files etc and consumer will have to buy credits for sharing photos, videos, and voice messages.

To know about how buy and use, it directly depends on where you are travelling.
WhatSim for WhatsApp

Case Study to Use Credits:
With €5 you get 1000 credits that you can use, for instance, to exchange 50 photos or 10 videos in many countries around the world. There are no limits to sharing your position and contacts. This way we guarantee the utmost transparency. Buying a recharge is quick and easy: just go to our website even from your smartphone and soon even from a dedicated app.

General Observation & Verdict

WhatSim is a refreshing innovative product for WhatApps loyalists & in future we would expect many SIM makers to come up with multiple choices of IM apps on single SIM with these creative offers. For now if you want to by this SIM, it is only available the WhatSim website and will available with local distributors in 100 countries soon.

Review: Active Fall Protection System from Apple

Apple is one company that believes in re-inventing itself with amazing products. Be it their MAC computers, iPODs, iPAD or iPhone, people around the world love Apple products. To add another feather to its bag, Apple is coming with a patented technology (Active Fall Protection) that help phone to rotate in mid-air when falling to save itself from damage. Looks like a SciFi thing but it is true.

Courtesy - UPSTO

Getting to know about “Active Fall Protection Technology”

Now how does this technology really works – at a broad level in layman’s language  the new system will recognize when a phone is dropped, which will then next calculate an estimated point of impact and shift its center of gravity to avoid striking sensitive components. Its developers  Nicholas V. King and Fletcher Rothkopf stated the system will depend on sensors to monitor physical device activity and positioning.

Build & Quality

As we all know all the latest iPad/iPhone models comes with inbuilt accelerometers, gyroscopes and GPS which so far were just used for gaming, & maps however now will be used extensively to save the phone.
The data from these sensors will go to phone’s CPU (central processing unit) while the phone is in free fall. System comes with a motor which in the next step shall apply appropriate force (Depending on the rate of spin, angular velocity, time to impact and other factors, the vibration motor may be powered at higher rotational speeds than normal, effectively controlling momentum and ultimately landing angle) inside the phone and make it to land on a preferred site, such as its side or back.
                                                          Courtesy - AppleInsider

The systems also comes with other components like sliding weights and miniature gas canisters and that move internally to save the phone from damage.

General Observation & Verdict

This new technology will surely bring paradigm shift in saving our portable electronics devices in future and for now since iPhones come at a premium price, it is going to be a smart move by Apple to bring this technology to its new phones soon aiming to increase span life of the phone.

When you snap a picture with the Prynt app, it captures a video of the moments before and after you took the picture. You’ll get your print-out, but showing that picture to the Prynt app will also bring up the short video, allowing you to better re-live the moment. Now that is really cool.

Pryant will be compatible with any smartphone that sports a 4.x-inch screen and there is an adaptor in the works for the bigger phones like the Apple’s  iPhone 6 Plus and Galaxy Note series.

General Observation & Verdict

Prynt is expected to launch in January 2015 and it will be the only time we can really get our hands dirty on it. We think it’s a cool invention however couple of early thoughts, - how costly will be its cartridge, which paper will be compatible to print photos on, how much will it impact on the power source etc. RT will be keeping a close watch on this gadget.

Review: Microsoft Band - A brilliant fitness multitasking gadget

From being pioneers of world's largest OS company to makers of gaming consoles, smartphones & tablets, Microsoft is no mood to stop here, they are now entering into little explored smart wearable sector which is gaining a lot of traction these days - The Fitness Bands.

"Microsoft Health - actionable insights for healthier living"

Microsoft Bands

Getting to know about new Microsoft Band

We were expecting something new from MS and stakes were high that we may hear the announcement soon but not sure that it will make a sudden foray into fitness bands category. Though from an outsider's lens, fitness band market is already overwhelmed with players like Nike, Fitbit & Jawbone etc. pouncing on each other to gain a share of marketplace. With lots of smart apps & data analytics happening all the time with avent of big data etc, health & fitness gadgets markets is turning into a serious market offering and most of the Industry experts feel that it is the right time for Microsoft to make a leeway into the same.

Build & Quality

The external design is hugely borrowed from Samsung’s Gear Fit smart watch. It comes with a colored touch-enabled display and capable of displaying bright  text, email & call notifications. By the way the band can also be used as a watch, displaying date and time with Bluetooth 4 technology to connect with host devices.

Inside the hood, a pleasant surprise awaits - Microsoft Band is far more superior to any other fitness band currently available. An inbuilt GPS tracker ensure right monitoring of your body gestures & movements, the UV sensor tracks exposure to sunlight so that your body receives right amount of sunlight, a skin temperature monitor & a heart rate sensor uses an optical sensor rather than audio sensors (fitted inside most of the other bands) to give far more accurate information than the latter.
Inside the hood - Microsoft Band

And its not just a fitness band. Use it as a smartwatch or a social media gadget for Twitter & Facebook integration, weather, calendar, stock tracking and Cortana integration (for users of Windows 8.1 smartphone).

Connectivity is important for any device to succeed and Microsoft has taken a smart step making this device OS independent i.e. this band is compatible with all three major OS Android 4.3 and 4.4, iOS 7.1(or later), and Windows Phone 8.1. However we do not know if it will be compatible with Blackberry device or not.

To add cherry on the top, Microsoft has revealed a cloud-based health service called the Microsoft Health. The data collected from the Microsoft Band and other third-party devices/apps, is stored & analysed on cloud service to provide insightful personal data points & fitness goals.

General Observation & Verdict

The Microsoft Band will empty your pocket by mere $199 — which is ominously less than the entry price of $349 for the Apple Watch.  MS Band is all set to dent other players in the market with all the features and lucrative offers.
The notifications tab of Microsoft Band

We believe the coolest thing about this band is the agnostic nature that it can operate on any kind of OS and shall revolutionize personal fitness management market by storm.
