iPhone XS vs. Note 9: Which $1,000 phone should you buy

The new iPhone of 2018 is out. And with it’s launch, the comparison to other maker especially with Samsung is out in open. This happens each year and users always want to know who takes the crown this year. For many of us a $1,000 phone may not be as flabbergasting when iPhone first broke the barrier with 2017's iPhone X. But one would wonder, if it is worth spending so much of money when all you need phone in 80% of cases to make calls (voice/video), take picture and surf internet & associated apps. The newly announced iPhone XS and Galaxy Note 9 both start at niche price range but do these phones have to justify the $1,000 price tag? Let’s spill some beans around it.

Key Things To Know About iPhone XS vs Samsung Note 9

a) Display: Note 9 has the larger OLED screen is a clear winner. The iPhone XS and even larger iPhone XS Max are Apple's second and third phones sports OLED display (the iPhone XR still uses an LCD screen). OLED technology known for delivering vibrant contrast and color, which gives phones using the display some premium cache. Note 9’s offers larger curved 6.4-inch display rather than the iPhone XS' 5.8-inch screen.

Also Read: World's first ChromeOS based 10" tablet

b) Camera: Surprisingly iPhone XS camera look the same as the iPhone X on paper, but Apple says it's enhanced the phone's dual 12-megapixel setup with software smarts that can automatically fix red-eye and pump up shadows and detail for improved HDR that Apple calls Smart HDR. In addition to that Apple has also supplemented more portrait lighting effects to the iPhone XS, and thus portrait selfies gives a greater depth. In addition a new slider adjustment that lets you edit the amount of blur you put on a Bokeh selfie after it's taken, a similar feature which Samsung already had for the last two years.

While Note 9's comes with a dual 12-megapixel camera setup and has an automatic scene recognition tool that utilizes AI to automatically select the "best" settings for your photos. The main camera's dual-aperture lens automatically changes to bring you better, brighter low-light shots, but the nature of the technology means that if subjects move, the picture may blur.

Hence camera wise, iPhone still leads the way.

In terms of video shooting, the Note 9 is loaded with super-slow motion video as well as slow motion (the latter is higher quality), while the iPhone XS has slow-motion video only -- this is a minor feature for most.
c) Hardware & Built: Apple's new A12 Bionic chip offers stiff competition to the Galaxy Note 9's Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 processor. The chipset is the phone's powerhouse and is made up of range of processors -- including the CPU, GPU for graphics and coprocessors such as the image signal processor for photography thus everything from loading apps and running daily tasks, to photo processing and power efficiency is handled with such an ease.

Apple promises apps will load up to 30 percent faster than they did on the iPhone X and that the entire phone will be 15 percent faster. Thus the iPhone is going to be more battery efficient and AR capabilities are top notch. Apple's new A12 chip uses a 7-nanometer manufacturing process, which helps in reducing space inside the phone to make place for a larger battery.

On other hand, the Snapdragon 845 processor performed extremely well since this chip is also made with the same 7nm process, and will also be ready to support 5G data connection speeds, something that Apple never mentioned in its presentation. We still feel, iPhone with its hardware offers better package in performance.

d) Battery: Note 9 is clear winner here.  Apple doesn't share battery capacity figures like the rest of the industry instead states that iPhone XS is expected to last 30 minutes per day longer than the iPhone X  i.e. about 11.5 hours, a work day. The Galaxy Note 9, meanwhile, run over 19 hours on a single charge with it’s 4,000mAh battery with so much ease.

e) Storage: Note 9 offer mores storage for the price. For $1,000, you get 64GB of iPhone XS storage and 128GB of storage on the Galaxy Note 9. That's double the space for photos and videos on Samsung's phone.

Also Read: Tata Tiago NRG - India's first most affordable & safest cross-over car

f) OS & Security updates, aka Android versus iOS 12: iPhones have always beaten Android in security updates and software upgrades in general. Apple updates all it phones at the same time. For example, iPhones receive their iOS 12 upgrade on Sept. 17. Google  makes its software available for new phones or its nexus series only. The Note 9 shipped with Android 8.1 Oreo and its upgrade to Android Pie may take a while.

General Observation & Verdict:

The tussle between loyalists of iPhone and Note devices is always on. Since iPhone comes with a brand value it is still perceived as rich man’s phone where as Android is perceived for masses. Most of the corporates & firms prefers iOS ecosystem over Android (after Blackberry disappeared). So Android still has to catch-up. At the end, its your pocket & utility what should determine a choice.

Updated (2020) Tips & Tricks: 10 things to consider while buying a new laptop

We all know that latest smartphones are capable of performing many computing activities however laptops are never out of work. You still need a laptop for more 'serious' computing capabilities at work, gaming or for leisure.

In case you are planning to buy or upgrade to a new Laptop, below are some key things you should consider.

Also Read: Detailed review on Xiaomi Laptop - Macbook Air look alike with Intel processor, 16GB RAM for $480

10 Key Things To Know When You Upgrade Your Laptop/Notebook

1) Screen Size:

This is one of the major selection criteria if you are planning to buy any laptop. Screen sizes may vary from lightweight 12 to 14-inch and even 15.6 / 17 inches. However with designs do come some trade-offs like – with smaller screen, the keyboard might be smaller or battery life and performance may be impacted. Most popular screen sized laptops are 15.6-inch which are suitable for graphics video editing, gaming and designing. The powerful laptops are typically of 15.6-inch or 17-inch sizes. For frequent travelers or mobile users, 12-14 inch laptop fits the bill due to light weight.

2) Design: Conventional or Hybrid

Many modern days laptops comes with flex mode, tablet convertibles/ hybrids, 360 rotatable and keyboard detachable (touch enabled). However these new laptops comes at a price tag – again if you need laptop for generic need – conventional laptops are good, however if you are too much into travel and presentations, reading on the go – than convertible laptop can be used.

3) Connectivity Options:

Many older laptops models comes with several ports like S-video, VGA, Firewire, multiple audio jacks, USB ports and so on. However, modern day laptops are so much smaller, you mostly get a very less USB ports, limited HDMI and a card reader slots. Some ultra-thin designs have even fewer USB ports and collapsible Ethernet ports. The latest tech fad is to dump Ethernet and video out entirely and go for USB type C ports (which will be universal and multipurpose).

Hence if you have connectivity issues at home or work and would need LAN cables, you may go for conventional Laptops. However if your home/ work place is fully WiFi enabled, 4G or Bluetooth compliant, you can go for ultra-thin laptops.

4) Drives:

Optical drives are bulky, so they've been dropped away within most models today. However, you'll still find 15.6-inch laptops with optical drives if you need one. The major trend is a shift to flash-based storage (SSDs) as compared to hard drives (HDDs). Flash storage is more costly but can be much smaller, lighter and offers better speed.

5) Touch Enabled Laptop:

These devices does reflect a lot of benefits especially for digital users who are more touch-savy, it will be easier to scroll through webpages, reading eBooks, large folders, photos and long documents. Windows 10 interface is optimized for touch and you can download many touch-optimized apps. However for traditional users, you can still opt for keyboard and mouse, you'll save money by dropping the touchscreen.

6) Battery Life:

This is one of the serious selection criteria. Old school Laptops had a battery life of 2 to 3 hours. However in today’s world, bare minimum battery life of 5 to 6 hours is desirable however for a full-workday without plugging in, you need 8 to 10 hours of battery life, for which you still have to pay a premium. Specially in India, where 24 hours electricity is still an issue, long battery life is always key consideration.

7) Graphic Cards:

Laptops can come with 3 kinds of graphics cards viz. Cohesive graphics chips, discrete graphics cards and some which have switchable graphics (to auto switch between internal and discrete graphics).

For regular use of documents, web, multimedia and basic games, integrated (cohesive)graphics are going to do just fine. If your main purpose is gaming or professional graphics video editing, then you should get a notebook with dedicated graphics card. Switchable graphics will conserve power if you're only doing basic use.

8) Operating System:

The OS impacts the overall cost of any laptop – You can buy a laptop without an operating system as it is a major cost saving – and run it on Linux or other open-source alternatives if you are familiar – Xubuntu, Ubuntu, Red Hat, Puppy Linux are few to name.

However for easy usage, Windows is still the most popular OS used by Corporate and Home users and is cheaper to buy a laptop bundled with an operating system rather than buying a standalone operating system later.

For niche users, you have an option to select Mac OS which comes at a premium and runs only on Mac Devices. These laptops are most expensive in today’s market.

10) Configuration (Processor - RAM - HDD):

Today, users can select from two processors – Intel and AMD. Intel still rules 90% of laptop world. For conventional users, they should go for Intel Core i5 or i7 processor (Dual or Quad core), with minimum 4GB/8GB RAM and 500 GB HDD. These laptops starts from Rs. 35,000 upto Rs. 1.5 Lacs.

We would not recommend, Intel Celeron M; i3 as they are slowly fading out.

However if you want very basic version, you can get a laptop on Atom Processor, 2/4 GB RAM and 256/500 GB HDD and is available from Rs. 15,000 to Rs. 30,000. You also have an option to buy a Chrome Laptop - which runs on Google's Chrome OS ( Cloudbased ) and is available for as little as Rs. 15,000.

Even Macbooks come in similar configuration but are very expensive due to hardware durability and UI. Macbooks are lightest of all laptops and comes with very long battery life.

A Guide to buy right Head-Phones

Introduction

In modern era of Gadgets - especially with Tablets & Smart phones / Notebooks, they are half incomplete if they are not complemented by a decent Headphones/ Headphone with Mic. No matter what your budget is, everybody wants their listening experience - especially the quality of sound to be optimally best. For music lovers, headphones are inevitable as people tend to spend more of their lives on the go. The other true benefits of Headsphone with Mic is that you can chat with your friends, without actually holding your gadgets in your hands and talk/listen while you are mobile without disturbing others, whether they're roommates, neighbors, or fellow commuters. Head-phones with mic are great multi-taskers in today's time.

Getting to know about modern day Headphones (with Mic)

Most of the customers/buyers in South Asia especially in India , considers buying of a new smartphone/ tablet or notebook as an investment with an estimated lifespan of around three years, yet the question always strikes  which are the cheapest pair of headphones I can buy?
If you have soon-to-be-obsolete tablet, phone, or MP3 player, you can bring new lease of life to it for as low Rs 300 and can go up Rs 10,000 (in case you have a wider budget) by getting a high-quality pair of headphones and really begin to enjoy all the sweet-sounding audio.

Types & Build of Various Headphones (with Mic)

Ear-Buds - these are very popular, inexpensive source of sound accessory for your gadgets. Earbuds are not an ideal listening option, since they don't enter your ear canal and as a result don't create a true seal that destroys the balance of the audio mix— solid bass response is purely eliminated. If you are really pressed for budget, you can get one of these.

Earphone - They sit further in your ear canal resulting into a seal, providing comfort when worn. They are much better than Ear-buds in terms of sound quality. However for Bass lovers a reasonable quality starts to emerge in the Rs 1500 range. There are few models from Skullcandy which are good.

Headphones -These are over-the-head (or behind-the-head) speakers that don't enter your ear canals at all. Circumaural models create a seal with cups that surround/cover your entire ear, whereas open, or supra-aural headphones sit directly on your ears without forming a seal. Some listeners also find headphones more comfortable to wear, and easier to put on and take off, than they do earphones. When it comes to consumer headphones, several companies stand out, including Sennheiser, Yamaha, Beyerdynamic, and Grado.

Noise-Canceling Headphones - As the name sugests, the noise-canceling headphones helps you enjoy  audio at much lower volumes. Most of these head-phones offers good or better-than-good sound quality and excellent comfort for long-term wearing.
Some of these Headphone comes with mic and offer extremely good quality call sound. Plantronics offer such headphones which are Lync & Skype compatible that offers both noise cancellation features in mic as well as headset. These headphones from Plantronics usually starts at a range of Rs 8,000.

Wireless Headphones - Wireless headphones are the most advanced of all head-phones. They are mostly based on Bluetooth technology and  the data signal containing Bluetooth audio is compressed. Post which the enhancement of the signal takes place to compensate for its deficiencies in a way that makes them less audible than before.
Few famous wireless headphones are from house of Jabra called Move Wireless and the SuperTooth Freedom, both of which double as headsets to let you answer cell phone calls.

General Observation & Verdict

Selecting a right head-phone (with or without mic) is no less than an art. While we have explained some bit of science also behind different kinds of head-phones, at the end there will be factors like price, usability & quality which will decide what you really need & desire.
