Overview
Apple
launched the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max in India on September 9, 2026,
at its “Surprise and Shine” event, alongside the global unveiling. India is
among the first markets to get the new Pro lineup this year, a shift from
Apple's usual staggered rollout. Both phones are built around the new A20 Pro
chip and introduce the biggest camera hardware change Apple has made to the Pro
line in years: a main camera with a genuine variable aperture, a first for any
iPhone. The Pro model gets a 6.3-inch display and the Pro Max a 6.9-inch
display, both running the new iOS 27 with an upgraded, more context-aware Siri.
Pre-orders
open on September 12, 2026, and the phones go on sale in India from September
18, 2026.

A20 Pro chip: built on a 2-nanometre process, with a
six-core CPU, a seven-core GPU, and a dual 16-core Neural Engine for on-device
AI tasks.

Variable aperture main camera: the 48MP Fusion main
camera can physically adjust between f/1.48, f/1.8, f/2.8, and f/4.0, a first
for an iPhone, alongside a 48MP Fusion Ultra Wide and a 48MP Fusion Telephoto
(4x/8x).

Pro-grade camera controls: manual control over shutter
speed, white balance, and a live histogram, aimed at users who want DSLR-style
control from a phone.

Redesigned Dynamic Island: a smaller footprint that can
still show up to three Live Activities at once, without giving up Face ID.

Battery life: Apple states up to 36 hours of video
playback on the Pro and up to 43 to 45 hours on the Pro Max, which the company
calls the longest battery life on any iPhone to date.

Faster charging: up to 50 percent charge in about 15
minutes with a compatible adapter.

iOS 27 and Apple Intelligence: a more context-aware
Siri that can draw on messages, emails, and photos, screen-aware features, and
an 80 percent faster AirDrop.

Storage up to 2TB: for the first time, both Pro models
can be configured with 2TB of storage.

New colours: Black, Silver, Glacier, and Burgundy.

Starting price has moved up again, and the flagship 2TB
Pro Max now crosses roughly Rs 3.3 lakh, pricing out most buyers from the top
configuration.

A20 Pro's real-world gains over the A19 Pro in
day-to-day use remain to be tested independently once review units are out.
•
The smaller Dynamic Island and redesigned back panel
mean existing iPhone 17 Pro cases will not fit.
•
No word yet on India-specific carrier deals or exchange
bonuses at launch, which usually affect the real price buyers pay.

Verdict: Buy or Skip
Buy, but
only if you are upgrading from an iPhone 15 Pro or older, or if you
specifically want the variable aperture camera and the longest battery life
Apple has shipped on a Pro model. The camera system is the first real hardware
leap on the Pro line in a few generations, and the battery gains are large
enough to notice in daily use, not just on a spec sheet.
