Getting to know about new Microsoft Band

We were expecting something new from MS and stakes were high that we may hear the announcement soon but not sure that it will make a sudden foray into fitness bands category. Though from an outsider's lens, fitness band market is already overwhelmed with players like Nike, Fitbit & Jawbone etc. pouncing on each other to gain a share of marketplace. With lots of smart apps & data analytics happening all the time with avent of big data etc, health & fitness gadgets markets is turning into a serious market offering and most of the Industry experts feel that it is the right time for Microsoft to make a leeway into the same.

Build & Quality

The external design is hugely borrowed from Samsung’s Gear Fit smart watch. It comes with a colored touch-enabled display and capable of displaying bright  text, email & call notifications. By the way the band can also be used as a watch, displaying date and time with Bluetooth 4 technology to connect with host devices.

Inside the hood, a pleasant surprise awaits - Microsoft Band is far more superior to any other fitness band currently available. An inbuilt GPS tracker ensure right monitoring of your body gestures & movements, the UV sensor tracks exposure to sunlight so that your body receives right amount of sunlight, a skin temperature monitor & a heart rate sensor uses an optical sensor rather than audio sensors (fitted inside most of the other bands) to give far more accurate information than the latter.

And its not just a fitness band. Use it as a smartwatch or a social media gadget for Twitter & Facebook integration, weather, calendar, stock tracking and Cortana integration (for users of Windows 8.1 smartphone).

Connectivity is important for any device to succeed and Microsoft has taken a smart step making this device OS independent i.e. this band is compatible with all three major OS Android 4.3 and 4.4, iOS 7.1(or later), and Windows Phone 8.1. However we do not know if it will be compatible with Blackberry device or not.

To add cherry on the top, Microsoft has revealed a cloud-based health service called the Microsoft Health. The data collected from the Microsoft Band and other third-party devices/apps, is stored & analysed on cloud service to provide insightful personal data points & fitness goals.

General Observation & Verdict

The Microsoft Band will empty your pocket by mere $199 — which is ominously less than the entry price of $349 for the Apple Watch.  MS Band is all set to dent other players in the market with all the features and lucrative offers.

We believe the coolest thing about this band is the agnostic nature that it can operate on any kind of OS and shall revolutionize personal fitness management market by storm.
